They almost broke up before the contest, but decided to just go ahead and do it. So never give up!

Unfortunately, although I haven't confirmed it, they lost in the finals...huh?...I cannot believe it. But I have read it in comments from others. They have gone on to touring all over and have their first CD out (see below).

To listen to their CD of there first audition song click here, NOW! Click the song Palladio. The real name is "Palladio/Allregretto" (and YES another CLASSICAL music number-YOU WILL START TO LIKE CLASSICAL). This is the WHOLE song that was originally played on Britain's Got Talent performance you see above. You only get 2 minutes to perform so the video is not the full song.

If this doesn't get you going, God help you.

The next song down, Kashmir is awesome too. Oh heck, just listen to the whole CD.

The CD is titled "Escala." It was JUST released on May 25, 2009, so it is still really new. They changed their name to Escala because there was some other childrens group with "Scala" name.

A Little Lifting Up for a Friend

Tony Dupuis from Lake Charles, LA informed me on Saturday evening that his father passed away. Tony's mother was holding him in her arms when he died.

I don't know about you, but I think that is pretty awesome and shows what real love is all about. He was pretty much alert up until the end, which is amazing.

Tony and I went to high school together at Sam Houston High School in Moss Bluff, LA just north of Lake Charles.

Tony has several CDs out. He is also a wonderful painter, for which I give him some grief as to how he paints, but it is amazing what he does. Many of his CDs are available at Target (online), CDBaby, Amazon and many more. So he is no amateur by any means.

While you listen scroll down and read his "About Tony Dupuis" THEN just take a look at some of the people that have linked to his "Friend" section...yeah, you will be surprised. He really is that good and respected in the music industry!

Tony and I have tried to support each other, via phone for a few years now. Encouraging and remembering old times, which mainly consisted of being stupid...but it still makes us laugh.

He is a great...no, no, no...awesome drummer and has played with so many of the top performers. Some of whom were in bands that we all grew up with a billion years ago.

I wish Tony and his entire family the very best. I am glad and honored to be his friend.

I find this is one of THE most beautiful renditions of this song. It is posted on YouTube and has been watched over 2,016,231 times with over 1,610 comments!!!

I am in my "violin period" right now, so it is everything "violin" for me.

Nino Rota wrote this back in 1968 for the movie "Romeo and Juliet." I am old enough to say I saw that movie when I was young, albeit 12 years old. They do not make movies like that anymore. So sad. It had a huge musical impact on me, even at that age. I remember it so vividly. He composed music for several other movies including "The Godfather".

I seem to be watching it over and over and over. There are no special electronic sound effects, or laser light sabers, just pure and clear emotion coming from that violin ... It is timeless.

Child prodigy, had 3 CDs out by age 15.

She is classically trained and adds her style into it. Like Bach on steroids...AND she is cute!

She slips and falls and NEVER misses a note!

Vanessa is HUGE, HUGE, HUGE all over the world, but especially in Europe and Asia. She lives in England and her cute English accent will, well...you know.

Her step-father taught her to play piano then gave her a violin from 1782 or something, and the rest is history. She still plays that acoustic violin to this day and mainly records with it in the studio.

If you have Bose speakers hook them up to your computer and turn it up. If you do not, now is the best time to invest in them.

So sorry for the delay in getting all the wedding and portrait pictures up for everyone. I have received my main computer back (well, a loaner anyway) and it is taking a while to upload and configure everything. The good part is, when I get my real computer ready to go (needs a new mother board) I can just dump this hard drive into it and not have to do this all over again.

In the meantime, this computer will be better for me to work from rather than trying to do everything from a laptop...YUK!

Vallancourt & DeMedicis Wedding!!!

They are getting married this weekend!

The ceremony will be held at the Christ Church in Tuscaloosa. It has been a long time coming so I am looking forward to it.

The reception will be held at the Indian Hills Country Club.

Sorry for the picture in this post. Just a quick upload. Just some hard drive issues and I just don't have time to get the backups and redo everything...at the moment (everything is fine though).

I am anxious to see the church on Friday evening to get an idea of everything. Even with the picture restrictions, it should be fine. We will just need to coordinate everything ahead of time.

Beautiful Painting

Almost looks so photographic. It was painted by John Godward around 1906.

It just touches me somehow. I wonder what she is thinking. Of love, love-lost or love endured forever.

I like shooting weddings because I sometimes get all wrapped-up in the reasons we are all there. It is not just another wedding, more often than not it is a wish that is long gone for me, but also a wish of things to come for the couple.

I received an email yesterday, from someone who touched me emotionally in such a significant way, so long, long ago. Just a one sentence email, disguised to others, and hidden just for me to see and understand, and I do.

I wanted to publicly say "thank you". But that seems so insignificant. It is not meant to be that way. Oh, so many wishes there. So many regrets. That one sentence has been returned to you so many times before and now. My brain now just incapable of keeping up with the years. I could not even begin to tell you how long it has been.

And if you have never really received a love letter, let this be the one. To have and to cherish. To read when I am gone. To hope for and dream with when all hope seems to be gone.

New Wedding!!!

Melanie Echols and Jesse Chambless will be getting married on August 21, 2010, at the Fountainview Mansion in Auburn, AL.

I have never photographed there, but it looks like there will be many, many opportunities.

We have not scheduled their Engagement pictures shoot yet, but we will get those done and posted online soon. I will post another anouncement at that time with a few more details.

If you are getting married, even next year, I would suggest making your photographer arrangements NOW!

There are so many people that appear to have waited until next year to get married. Add to those the couples that planned on it anyway, and you have a problem. Booked photographers.

The great photographers always get booked early. Do not be one of those brides that wait and cannot find even a decent photographer. Not all photographers are the same.

I have had to turn down several brides in the past because I was booked. It is a sad situation. Most of the problem is they waited too long to even start looking.

It is never too early to start looking but BOOK EARLY!

Ok, so Monica's and Detrick's album is sorta done! All the graphics have been laid out and all I need to do is go back and add some text and do a look over and it will be finished.

After those things are completed, I will need to save all the page images to a format the flash player thingy can read and create the Album Showcase and upload it to the server. Then I can link it all to the website.

I know, things can be sooo uncertain, right now. The price of a wedding can be staggering.

So many brides want their photography to be at the top of their list, while others just consider it an after-thought and do not really care, which is unfortunate. They just want some "...snapshots..." of their wedding.

The price for a great photographer can appear to be frightening to so many brides so they just compromise their dreams and hire a mediocre photographer because of price or they waited too long and a good one has already been booked.

What is not known is that a great photographer can save you money if it is done right and creatively from the beginning. With nothing compromised.

When you get engaged and have a date set, you should immediately shop and hire your photographer. The most disappointing calls I have are when a bride is kinda desperate to find a photographer because all the good ones are booked and she is just going down the list in the phone book and asking for price (NEVER SHOP FOR A PHOTOGRAPHER BY PRICE ALONE).

To tell a bride you are booked is really sad. For me, I know she will probably have to hire a photographer that is not really up to the task. I see their work all the time. Many times a bride will bring me their disk of images so I can "fix" them. Very sad to see straight-out-of-the-camera wedding pictures that she paid a lot of money for. Yuk!

Here, we have our printed prices, and just so you know, we may have an option or two that is not posted on our price list. Those may be an alternative for you if you are not wanting to hire a photographer and spend a lot of money up-front. Some brides have a budget set for their photography, but most do not. Those brides have a real hurdle to overcome with some photographers, because they will probably pay for more than they get.

If you have questions about your wedding photography, you can always go to the homepage and click on the "Choosing Your Photographer" links and read what to look for and what questions to ask. It can be surprising what you will learn, if you know what questions to ask. Unfortunately, most brides have no clue what questions they should be asking. There is such a difference in a good photographer and a bad one. Getting a bad or mediocre one is so easy to do, because owning a camera and a business card pretends to be a legitimate reason to be called a Photographer. It is not.

In between watching the Star Trek movie trailers over and over and over (my oldest daughter and husband took me to see it last weekend) ... I have managed to get all the engagement pictures for April Vallancourt and Jeff DeMedicis online here.

Those two small people in the photo are April and Jeff...you can click on it and make it bigger.

There was a lot of kissing going on during the shoot...what can I say (Sometimes I had to yell at them to 'Ok, kiss her!' - geeezzz, a photographer's life is full of amazing things).

The picture above is a pastel coloring. It is kinda hard to tell with the image size. But it is awesome...I'm just sayin'.

Oh, by the way, the new Star Trek movie trailers are FANTASTIC when you have a set of Bose* speakers hooked up to you computer!

New Gallery Section Coming Soon...Maybe

This is a screen shot of the new Gallery (Storefront) that is coming soon (You can click on the graphic for a larger look). It is rather complicated to get setup...that's putting it mildly...and I don't want to talk about it anymore...

I am just about ready to tie it in with my current website. No changes on your end will be necessary. When you click on a "Gallery" for a specific Wedding, portrait, etc., it will take you to a screen that is specific for that "event" or person.

One of the nice things is, when you order prints they will be sent directly to you. The bad side is I cannot do the Fine Art print orders through this system, I can still print them, but you will need to call, or come by to look at samples of Fine Art stuff (and yes, there is a difference).

I am currently waiting for my store-front domain name "www.dugganstudio.net" to be okey-dokied and sent through the system so I can point it to specific events. I can get to the main page, but I need to get to specific weddings, etc. so that will take 24-48 hours...hmmmm.

Anyway, barring any suicide in the next couple of days, over this, I should have it linked to some recent pictures.

Homepage, Shopping Cart All Changing...

I am in the process of deciding what I what to bring to the new website, new stuff to add, making everything super-duper neat...and oh yeah, just how much time it is going to take.

All this is a really big deal. If you are not aware, it is easier to start a NEW website from scratch than it is to change an existing one. There is so much planning and work involved. You want to make the changes (in my case hosting and shopping cart changes as well) as quickly as possible then flip the switch.

The hosting and shopping cart changes just complicate everything exponentially. Currently both are located with the same company. The changes involve separate companies servers and linking together.

I will keep you posted here of the progess AND the process.

Here are some graphics and a movie poster for my daughter's first movie, that was shown at Slamdance (Sundance) Film Festival in Utah recently.

Kinda neat, huh?

Don't forget..."Me" = Ashley!!! (not me personally, but the word 'Me' in the graphics...you get it don't you?)

"Me" = Ashley because she narrates and tells some of the story in the movie. The director/writer said Ashley did such a good job acting, she added some narration to the movie and had her do it! They wanted the movie to be from her perspective (big Hollywood word - in case you didn't know).

Choosing Your Photographer Lesson #7

I recently had a call from a potential bride, who was looking for a photographer. When I asked what her budget was, she replied, "about $500 - $700...".

I gulped, and asked her if she had been to my website and she said she was looking at it ... (another pause and a gulp).

Just so we are clear on all this, if this is your total wedding photography budget, you might as well get a relative to shoot your wedding. Don't waste your money on hiring someone. You will get the same quality from a relative, as you would finding and hiring an amateur/part-timer/pretender in that price range;

Very little, if any, creativity
Rudimentary poses, at best
No retouching
No enhancements
All straight out-of-the-camera pictures (see links below)

Additionally, you are out some definitely wasted money. But, if you are ok with all of the above, go for it.

Oh, I can assure you there will be amateurs, wannabes and part-timers that will be happy to shoot your wedding and give you pictures straight out-of-the-camera (link 1 link 2 - click to view the difference) and burned to a disc for that price. But, you will not get a professional anywhere near your wedding.

Just because someone has a listing in the yellow-pages, a camera and a car does not make them a professional.

I really sympathized with the bride that called, on one hand, because that may have really been all she had to spend (or she just had no idea how much a professional photographer charges).

I spend anywhere from 200-250 hours on every bride; from engagement photos through the reception, plus all the retouching and enhancements, putting together the WebShow and the Album Showcase and other things. $500-$700 does not even come close to paying me for my time, much less "stuff" too.

On the other hand, I wondered how much she was spending on her dress, her caterer, her flowers, if there was going to be any liquor at the reception, limousine, etc.

I have shot a wedding/reception where the bride said she didn't have any money and "BADA-BING!" you get to the reception and there are 300+ people there, full bars at various locations - and FREE liquor, all you can eat buffet, full band (not DJ). It was very sad, because she really didn't buy many photographs for her wedding day...didn't have any money left...oh really?! Now she has just a handful of individual photographs and a LOT of memories, and memories will fade.

So many brides think of their photographer as the last thing they have to get. It should be right up there with your location and date of your wedding.

I have had one bride recently sign-up and she has no idea where the ceremony and reception are going to be, but she knows the date. That is a smart bride.

A photographer should never be an afterthought only when everything else has been chosen.

The photographer (a good one) is intent on capturing the memories and feelings of your special day, not just some snapshots. If you are just looking for some snapshots of the most important day in your life ... get a friend, or relative to shoot your wedding.

I have had a bride bring me a disc of images, another "photographer" shot, of her wedding ... just 288 pictures - total. It was very sad, plus they looked like a 13 year-old shot them. 288 pictures can be taken before the wedding even starts. There were no engagement photos, no final fitting photos, no formal photos and no rehearsal photos and not really much of anything else. But all of them were straight out-of-the-camera (no retouching or enhancements).

It was even more sad to have her sit in my office and cry, because she was sad at what quality she had been given for her $1000. She thought she was getting a good deal...she did not.

Your wedding is the most important day in your life. Your photography should reflect that special day.

Each lesson will provide you with vital information and what specific questions you should ask when meeting a potential photographer. I would suggest you print each one out and study them carefully.

Remember, it is YOUR wedding. You should not settle for what the photographer has chosen for you. Make sure you understand the packages, or plans and what each contains. Not knowing what is really meant by "4 hours," or "6 hours" of coverage can be heartbreaking, if you are expecting something completely different.

"Choosing Your Photographer" Lesson #4 (Repost)

Ok, so you just got engaged. Now what?

In addition to your wedding location you need to shop for a photographer (and a lot of other things).

There is nothing more discouraging than to find a really good photographer, only to learn they are booked for your date.

So many brides wait to even start looking for their photographer until after they have everything else accomplished. That is a very bad scenario. You need to start looking for a photographer immediately, more often than not, at the same time you are looking for a wedding and reception location.

Choosing your photographer is not just about getting some "pictures" taken at your wedding. The good photographers are booked well in advance.

How can you tell a good one from a mediocre photographer (or worse)? First thing you need to do is look at their website. Is the website professional looking or something that maybe a 10 year old created? I would post link examples, but that would be kinda rude...

Do the photographs displayed look like they are straight out of the camera? You may say, I have no idea. The easiest way is to check for color saturation, sharpness of photos, special effects. I have noticed a few part-timers use so many pictures straight out of the camera. This is very bad because this is what you need to expect for YOUR final pictures.

No retouching, no color or image enhancements, no nothing. It is very sad to see what a bride can expect from some photographers, many of them part-timers.

I have posted a sample a few posts back of what a photograph, straight out of the camera, looks like and the retouched and enhanced version. It would be very wise to check it out, so click here!

Never, ever compromise on your wedding photography. You are NOT saving money by hiring a photographer for $500.00 when most legitimate photographers are charging $1500+. You will be grossly disappointed in the quality and the creativity (and lack there of) of the photographer.

Snapping some pictures at a wedding does not make you a photographer.

I attended a benefit concert in Lake Charles, LA this past weekend for a friend of mine, Tony Dupuis. We went to high school together. What made it even more special, he had no idea I would be there, or WORSE, be a part of the show.

There were mixed emotions about going back to my hometown. Everything has changed so much....except for the mall :(

Tony had a fall and badly hurt his neck area and will need surgery to get everything back to working-order. He is pretty much in pain most of the time. The injury has affected how long he can keep the Gallery open.

He is obviously loved in the art community there. The benefit raised over $10,000 and they are still counting. I sold 3 of the 4 watercolor prints (see the Bluemoom Gallery) I had there, so that will go to help him pay for the surgery.

Look for these in the Bluemoom Gallery:

Tony is a wonderful drummer, musician and artist and very well respected in the music world. He is not able to sit on a drum stool at all and cannot perform live because of the pain. So a lot of projects, both music and art, have had to be put on hold.

His musical career is long and impressive and I am honored he is my friend (albeit older than me).

Choosing Your Photographer Lesson #2 (Repost)

When shopping for a wedding photographer, it should be about more than just price, much more. While everyone has a limit, way too many brides have no budget, in mind, for anything. Your wedding photographer should account for 8.5-12% of your total wedding budget. Some spend a LOT more and others spend less.

Many brides sign-up for a lower plan with the intention of spending more. I call those brides...very smart... :)

Your wedding photographer is going to capture an event in your life which should be worth more than just a stack of "snapshots."

I get brides (& sometimes grooms) that tell me they "...just want some snapshots" of their wedding. Well, you do not want me then. I don't do snapshots. I have turned away many brides because they were just looking for "...nothing special" in their wedding photography.

I am amazed that people will spend THOUSANDS of dollars on location, even more on food, cake, flowers, limousine and a host of other items for their wedding, but skimp on the photographer. Even worse is their uncle or brother has a camera...

When the wedding is over, the food eaten, the flowers have died, and the wedding dress has been stored, what do you have? MEMORIES. If your wedding photography exceeds your expectations then your album becomes even more special!

Who wants just a plain album with some "pitures" (I get that a lot, "we just want some 'pitures'") .

I had one bride who bought the lowest plan I had. It was actually the worse value for any bride. But I figured they were on a very tight budget. When I got to the reception, I was floored by the extravagance on food, flowers and let's not forget the open bar. While those things ARE wonderful to have for your wedding, skimping on the photography should not happen. The photography is the ONLY thing you have when the wedding is over.

Your wedding photographs should EXCEED your expectations.

"Choosing Your Photographer" Lesson #3 (Repost)

Compare very carefully!!

I get so many brides that inquire into my services and I try to teach them what to look for in comparing photographers. You have to compare accurately and fairly.

If Studio A is charging $1500.00 for 6 (or more likely 4-6) hours of coverage. That means several things:

The 6 hours is for wedding day coverage ONLY (usually). I have heard of additional hours ranging from $125.00-$250.00 per hour.
If you want engagement, or bridal formal pictures that is extra. Some photographers will charge you $250.00 just for their time (some charge $125.00) for each additional session. That equals $500.00 for an engagement and formal bridal shoot PLUS the cost of any photographs.
Want your bridal shower photographed? That's another $250.00 just for time.
Oh, you want your bridal luncheon, final fitting, buying your shoes pictures, tux fitting, etc, etc, etc? That will be $250.00 for each event.
Review the "package" contents carefully. More often than not, they will include the cheapest priced items. If you want to upgrade, then that's where they get you.
So, you want to upgrade an album, etc...Sorry. Many photographers will not allow you to upgrade anything, period. IF they do, it is at a very high premium.
So you need black & white photos for the newspaper announcements (engagement & wedding)...that is extra.
Want your rehearsal and/or rehearsal dinner photographed? Oh, that's extra too.
Want to add spot color on a B&W photograph? Extra...or they will allow you a certain number of photographs for special effects. Any more than the allowed number? Extra. Don't even inquire into other special effects...probably do not offer it.

Don't be fooled into what is being offered. Read everything carefully and ask a LOT of questions.

There is something even better. If you have questions about a "package" from a photographer, call me and I will be happy to go over it with you, AT NO OBLIGATION! Wow, how much better can it get!? No pressure, no nothing. If it is a good deal, I will tell you! Of course, I might need to make mine better... ;)

It's "OH MY GOSH!" Day

GraphiStudio is the Italian company that creates the awesome coffee-table albums I offer.

They have recently offered their design software for download to their clients. This is the same software they use if you want them to design the album for you.

I have never really offered that service, because that would just be kinda a dangerous and scary surprise if you didn't like the album ('oops, sorry' would be all I could say). But maybe not. I was just too afraid to do that. Plus they charged a "design fee" which was above and beyond the album cost. Nothing wrong with that but I was just nervous about the whole process.

With the software I can use their bag of tricks to create a really awesome custom coffee-table album right-off-the-bat!

I am playing with it now...so if you're getting married soon, LET'S DO IT!!!

A professional would never, ever provide you with such a low-level of service. Well, that's not completely true. Most will not. I have actually had brides bring me their disc of images to "fix". They were heartbroken at the quality. Oh, and this from from a studio photographer. For just a little more they could have had better, much better.

Be careful what you ask for, most of the time you get what you pay for. In one bride's case, she paid $1000 for 288 pictures and she got pictures straight out-of-the-camera. Just like the one here. Even worse, they looked like a 9 year old took the pictures. In her case she didn't even get what she paid for. I can take that many pictures before the wedding even starts!

Educational Moment...

I like to do a fair amount of "artsy" stuff when I photograph. The picture to the left (that's <--- that way) is a good example (and yes it is 4:07 AM). People think they are really neat. But more often than not, they will purchase a print on regular luster or glossy paper...ummm...NO000!! While you can purchase it on anything you want, the BEST paper types to print it on would be:

Matte (I call that 'Fine Art-Light')
Real Fine Art paper ( I usually recommend the Hahnemule- William Turner paper)

These papers give the print a real fine art look (I know-duh) AND it will last a butt-load longer (can I say that?).

If you get a fine art print on FINE ART paper please make sure that you ALWAYS mat it and use a non-glare glass (the non-glare glass just looks better). You are paying a premium for the print, you might as well make it last longer than you will!

NEVER, EVER place glass directly on top of a print no matter what paper you are using, but ESPECIALLY fine art paper. I don't care what the frame-making person says.

I am just a little over half-way through the Pre-Ceremony pictures. I think I should be able to finish the category sometime today/tonight.

Just as an FYI...I never want to post anything in the Gallery that is straight out-of-the-camera.

The difference can be dramatic.

Anyway, I will post when they are done and moving to the Ceremony pictures.

I concluded it was time, since I noticed I was running out of the current ones.

Two great announcements are: 1) I have not raised Plan pricing; 2) I have added "Packages" that will allow for brides that really do not want to choose what they want, to just pick a package.

Ok! I have completed the initial layout.

All I need to do now is add the text and create the online Album.

Sometimes that is not a big deal and other times...well...it just turns into a real pain. More of an annoyance with the technology. I will definately be finished with it and have it uploaded sometime today.

I am going to take a break for a bit, since my brain is now even more numb than usual.

Oh, if you click on some of the pictures in the blog to make them bigger, you will notice some banding. That is not in the album files. I have to create very low resolution files to upload to the blog. The low resolution causes the banding...just an fyi.

I am currently working on the Album Showcase, so check back often.

Don't forget this takes a LOT of work so it is not something I can just "bada-bing" and it is done.

It looks like I am up to page 20.

Album Showcases can be the link to a wedding. If it is done well, it makes a wonderful memory. These are used to create the coffee-table books, if the couple wants one.
